It’s a common sentiment.
But it’s important to remember that you don’t need to work for a specific company to make that transition.
If you work for someone else, it’s unlikely they will be hiring.
“It’s not going to happen for every person,” says Kristin Schmitz, a spokesperson for the Institute of Physiotherapy at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
“I can think of some companies that have really done that.”
The Institute of Physical Therapy at the Mayo Clinic, for example, is actively recruiting employees to take on new jobs.
The company is currently hiring two positions: one that is physically and psychologically oriented, and another that is in the health care field.
The physical therapist position requires a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy and an associate’s degree.
The health care position requires an associate degree in health care management and a master’s degree and a diploma in physical education.
Both positions are part of the physical therapy program.
If the physical therapist positions are available, the health center will consider the position.
“Physiotherapy is an essential part of a physician’s practice,” says Chris C. Gassman, director of the Institute for Health Education, Technology, and Practice.
“There’s a very big opportunity to get back into the workforce.”
It’s important not to let that put you off.
“The most important thing to remember is that people don’t have to work at a certain company to get their career started,” says Schmitzer.
“A lot of companies have a large number of people who are already employed, so it’s very easy to get a foothold in a new company.”
When you’re ready to apply, look for opportunities in the healthcare field.
“As with any new career, there are challenges,” says Gassmann.
“But when you are looking for a job in a particular field, look at the salary ranges.”
If you’re interested in an internship, look into opportunities in your community.
“We don’t expect to be able to offer internships in the physical therapists office, so if you want to make sure you are qualified and well prepared, do your homework,” says C.C. Gresham, president and CEO of the National Physical Therapy Association.
“If you can’t make the right fit, or if you are just looking for something a little different, then we would encourage you to apply in another field.”
Find a job at a healthcare facility The first step to getting back to work is finding a job that’s good for you.
If your company is accepting applications, you can use that information to help find out how to apply for the right job.
This will give you a sense of how much experience you have, and what kind of job you could expect.
“You can get a lot out of that, because we want people who have been there for years,” says Greg Egan, chief marketing officer at the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections.
“What we’re looking for is someone who has worked in that area before.”
You’ll need to show that you have the skills needed to meet the company’s needs, but the key is to have the right mindset.
“Do you think you are ready for the next level?,” says Egan.
“When I started here, I was looking for an internship with a company that would allow me to earn an extra $2,000 a month.
Now I’m looking at an internship where I will earn $20,000 in salary a year.”
If the internship doesn’t offer that kind of salary, try applying for a position in the community.
That’s where you’ll have more time to learn and apply your knowledge.
“Once you get into the community, you’ll be able be a better fit for that,” says Shmitz.
“This is your chance to grow your skills, to get experience, to be prepared to be a more effective employee.
I’m a physical therapist by trade, so I know what it’s like to have to do that.”
Make sure you can take the next step If you can, start by finding a company with a health center and the ability to take care of your physical therapy needs.
This is a great place to start, because the physical care industry is highly competitive.
“Every year, we’re trying to hire about 5,000 new physical therapists,” says Okeke.
“So if you can hire them, that’s huge.
If not, you should.”
If it’s a good fit, you might be able apply to a facility in your area, but that will require a lot of time and effort.
It might be time to go back to school.
“To do that, you need to get your certification in physical medicine, physical therapy, or allied health,” says John T. Gaddis, chief executive officer of the Ohio State University College of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
